The fall of a star Mohammad Zillur Rahman the legend of Bangladesh national politics is no longer. A veteran politician, Zillur breathed his last at the Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore on Wednesday afternoon after fighting for life for 11 days. He was 84. Zillur Rahman was born on 9 March 1929 at Poirtala, Brahmanbaria, and his mother's paternal home. His father Mohammad Maher Ali Mian, was a lawyer, the Chairman of the Mymensingh Local Board and the Member of the District Board. In 1945, he passed Matriculation from Bhairab K. B. High School. He had complieted graduation with an Intermediate of Arts (IA) in 1947 from Dhaka Intermediate College.[5] In 1954, he got his MA with Honours in History and a LLB degree from Dhaka University. Mohammad Zillur Rahman participated in the Bengali language movement of 1952. As an Awami League candidate, he was elected as a member of parliament in the 1970 national elections of Pakistan. So he was parliamentarian before Bangladesh born. During the Bangladesh Liberation War, Mohammad Zillur Rahman actively participated in the Government-in-exile. After the war, he became the General Secretary of Awami League in 1972. He was elected as a member of the parliament in the 1973 general elections. After the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Mohammad Zillur Rahman was arrested by the army junta, and spent four years in prison. He served as a minister in the Awami League government between 1996 and 2001. Md. Zillur Rahman was the 19th President of Bangladesh and the 16th person to hold the post. He was elected uncontested on Feb 11, 2009 and took office the following day. Bangladesh is missing a huge leader. Bangladesh President Zillur Rahman Wednesday died at a hospital in Singapore said a media report. He was 83. He died at Mount Elizabeth Hospital of Singapore where he was undergoing treatment for respiratory problems and some other complications since March 11, reported thedailystar.net. Before being flown to Singapore, Zillur was admitted to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka March 10 with respiratory problems. He had fever since March 9. The president was on respiratory support while boarding the aircraft for Singapore, the media report quoted Bangabhaban (the government resident of the president) the official sources as saying. Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Leader of Opposition in parliament Khaleda Zia and Speaker and the acting President of Bangladesh Abdul Hamid expressed deep condolence at his death.
